Jared had an interesting observation that I hadn’t connected. It’s worth writing about.
He noticed that, aside from photos of the boys, I generally take photos of single objects. The Ansco camera is a perfect example. So is this bell.
I don’t have a great explanation to this fact, except that solitude is a running theme that has covered my whole life. My psychiatrist noted that I may not be taking interesting photos at the moment.
When I was in preschool, I was the little kid that would go off and play by herself even though I knew a lot of the kids on the playground. There wasn’t a good reason for this, I just wanted to play by myself on the playground. I have no clue how much of that was because I was used to playing by myself at home, as an only child.
So it doesn’t surprise me to be in my mid-30’s and spending a lot of time by myself (with the kids) and it doesn’t surprise me in the least that this trait has seeped and kind of taken root at the base of my first photography project. Maybe if I had a little less anxiety, I’d look outside my immediate environment to capture stories with my camera.
I’ll work on it.
